Alyson Walker Named Canada Soccer General Secretary, 1st Woman To Hold The Job

Alyson Walker, who played university soccer for the McGill Martlets, has been named general secretary of Canada Soccer, in a huge win for women’s rights.

Former Canadian Olympic Committee (COC) executive Alyson Walker has created history by becoming the first woman to hold the position at the national governing body. 

Canada Soccer – the governing body for soccer in Canada, a Member Association of FIFA (Fédération internationale de football association) and Concacaf – has said that Alyson Walker will officially begin her new role on January 22, 2024.

Alyson Walker expressed happiness over her new role. Alyson Walker said, “I am dedicated to fostering growth across all facets of the game and ensuring athletes have safe and equitable environments to play and compete in.”

Alyson Walker said that she would collaborate with players, teams, coaches and partners to take Canada Soccer to unprecedented levels. 

Alyson Walker becomes the first woman to hold a top staff position at the governing body of Canadian soccer.

Charmaine Crooks, the President of the Canadian Soccer Association, said, “Alyson brings extensive business experience to her new role, and we are confident in her ability to lead us forward.” She further said, “We unite our membership and continue to build toward the Paris 2024 Olympic Games and a home FIFA World Cup in 2026.”

Alyson Walker is an experienced player. She has spent her career working in sport, especially professional sport and esports. She has experience in both private and public markets.

In recent months, women are making great progress in the sports industry. Recently, Rebecca Welch created history by becoming the first female referee of the English Premier League. She is the first female referee ever to take charge of an English Premier League match on 23 December.

Last month, she made history by becoming the first woman to be appointed in the Premier League. She officiated at games in the Women’s Super League and the 2017 and 2020 Women’s FA Cup Finals.
