Biden Administration Approves $4.28B Student Debt Relief for Public Service Workers

The Biden-Harris administration now approved $4.28 billion in student debt cancellation for several 54,000 public servants across the nation. This latest action further adds to the total debt relief approval of about $180 billion, 4.9 million borrowers across the nation, and $78 billion through the PSLF Program.

The 55,000 public servants approved for debt cancellation today are workers who have dedicated their lives to giving back to their communities.

U.S. Secretary of Education Miguel Cardona reiterated that the Biden administration repaired the flawed PSLF Program to discharge educators and other public employees after they make 120 on-budget payments. This programme aim at targeting people in professions that are deemed as central, this includes teachers, health care providers, police, fire fighters among others and relevant departments. Submitting employment certification is discussed below; all other PSLF Program activities take place on StudentAid.gov starting in July 2024.

Other student loan debt relief announced by the administration includes IDR plans of $56.5 billion, borrowers defrauded or schools closed, at $28.7 billion and for the disabled, $16.2 billion. Also, the administration sought and secured $900 addition to the maximum Pell Grant the largest grant in the last ten years.
