Biden Speaks With Mexico’s Obrador About Migrant Crisis; What To Expect?

Joe Biden, the President of the United States, spoke with Andrés Manuel López Obrador, the President of Mexico, about the migrant crisis at the southern border on Thursday.

Joe Biden and López Obrador agreed that additional enforcement actions were needed to address the migrant crisis at the border. They highlighted the importance of reopening key ports of entry. The two leaders also agreed to work on getting at the root causes of migration.

Surge of migrants at Mexico’s border with Texas has become a problem for the United States border patrol. On Wednesday, U.S. Customs and Border Protection encountered over 12,000 undocumented migrants crossing the border.

Casa Alitas Director Diego Lopez said, “It’s an extra burden that we’ve all had to lift.” Many migrants were also taken to Immigration and Customs Enforcement.

Biden to send top-level team to Mexico for migration talks

Joe Biden will send a high-level US delegation to Mexico soon to discuss migration concerns amid the spike at the southern border.

The two nations’ leaders agreed that immediate action was required to address migrant crisis. They discussed continued “efforts to manage migratory flows.”

Biden asked Anthony Blinken, United States Secretary of State, Alejandro Mayorkas, United States Secretary of Homeland Security, and Elizabeth Sherwood-Randall, United States Homeland Security Advisor, to go to Mexico to meet with the Mexican President and discuss the migrant crisis at the border.

What to expect?

Biden and Obrador spoke about the migrant crisis in Texas and Arizona. The two presidents agreed to reduce illegal crossings. The US authorities reported approximately 10,000 migrant crossings every day.

On Tuesday, the authorities closed two rail bridge crossings on the Mexico-Texas border in Eagle Pass and El Paso in order to limit illegal entries of migrants.

John Kirby, the Coordinator for Strategic Communications at the National Security Council in the White House, has confirmed that additional enforcement actions are agreed between the two leaders.

Recently, the authorities in Texas pledged to arrest migrants suspected of crossing the United States-Mexico border illegally. Republican Gov. Greg Abbott of Texas on Monday signed the law, known as SB 4, that gave Texas law enforcement authorities the power to arrest and seek the deportation of migrants.

In recent months, Texas has arrested various illegal migrants crossing the Rio Grande on trespassing charges. The illegal migrants were taken to a jail for weeks or months before turning them over to the Border Patrol.
