British Embassy in Kabul released a statement on Tuesday relaying that the United Kingdom has pledged a development aid of £155 million for 2021 at Afghanistan 2020 Conference in Geneva. The aid is a symbol of UK’s commitment towards peace, prosperity and security in Afghanistan. Last month too UK had pledged an aid of £70 million for Afghan security.
The aid money is hoped to bring stability to the lives of people of Afghanistan and bring essential services to their access more prudently. It is also aimed to make girls in the country accessible to education, help keep preventable diseases and deaths caused by them at bay among mothers and children, provide food and medical supplies during harsh winters, especially with worsened conditions due to Covid-19. Furthermore, the aid will improve government system, strengthen country’s infrastructure and expand educational and healthcare network. This will also create jobs for people and move the country towards financial independence.
UK support to Afghanistan over the last 19 years has led to significant progress on education, healthcare, gender equality, governance and more. The country is at a critical juncture with peace talks, and I am proud that we are maintaining our aid commitment at this time, showcasing Britain as a force for good in the world.
British Ambassador to Afghanistan, Alison Blake,
He added, “The Afghan people have known conflict and struggle for too long. This announcement reiterates our commitment to paving a more stable and peaceful future for Afghanistan.”
UK had co-hosted an anti-corruption event on the side during Afghanistan 2020 Conference in Geneva, that was attended by many Afghani officials. The meeting extended affirmation of UK’s support to Afghanistan government to promote transparent working, call out corruption and empower civil society and open and equitable governance.
