Channel Crossings: French authorities rescue at least 225 migrants
The French authorities rescued 225 migrants just recently, as scores of people continued their journey in the direction of the UK. Data from the British authorities highlights that 1,452 migrants crossed the Channel to the UK coast in the 7 days ending on March 23.
Since the beginning of 2025 and ending on March 23, a total of 5,847 migrants have crossed the Channel. The BBC has reported that this is the earliest point in the year that the crossing numbers have reached these levels since record-keeping started in 2018.
The French authorities continue to issue alerts about the dangers of trying to cross the Channel in small boats. This maritime area is one of the busiest shipping lanes globally. More than 600 commercial ships cross this portion daily.
In addition to the shipping lane, the meteorological conditions can also be quite difficult frequently. It is already a risky task to cross the Channel on small boats. The risk increases much higher as temperatures drop.
