Thousands of people have gathered in Chicago for the Democratic National Convention – that happens every four years before a presidential election. This year’s event started on Monday and continues until Thursday. There is a lot happening at the venue.
The DNC 2024 looks slightly different from those in the past. The ruling party has already officially nominated Vice President Kamala Harris as its candidate after the incumbent leader Joe Biden dropped out of the race.
The in-person roll call on Tuesday is nothing more than a formality. Celebrities including rapper Lil Jon performed too. But several of the other DNC traditions are the same. The gathering has already heard from Biden, Barack and Michelle Obama, and Hillary Clinton.
During back-to-back speeches yesterday, the former President and First Lady highlighted a number of things, such as “hope is making a comeback” by Michelle Obama and the “bluster and chaos” of Trump’s time in office by Barack Obama.
Trump’s former spokesperson Stephanie Grisham delivered a speech too. “I couldn’t be part of the insanity any longer,” she stressed. Clinton, the presidential candidate in 2016, offered her tribute to Biden the same evening.
Many attendees at the Democratic National Convention hope that Kamala Harris could finally break the “highest, hardest glass ceiling” in the US by becoming the first female president. But the event in Chicago hasn’t been all peaceful.
Demonstrations have been taking place outside the venue centre, focusing on opposition to US support of Israel. In Monday night’s address, Biden admitted that the activists “have a point”, going on to say that “a lot of innocent people are being killed, on both sides.”
