The Gaza ceasefire has brought hope to millions of people. But the health challenges ahead are immense. More than 46,600 people in the territory are dead and at least 110,000 others have been injured. The entire population of Gaza has faced displacements.
The real number of fatalities and casualties is likely much higher. Only a smaller portion of Gaza’s hospitals remain partially operational. Nearly 30,000 people – or an estimated 25% of those injured – face life-changing injuries and need rehabilitation.
More than 12,000 critically ill and injured patients in Gaza, including at least 5,000 people, need to be evacuated at the earliest. Everyone in Gaza – after nearly 16 months of conflict – is affected by stress, anxiety, depression and loneliness.
Before the brutal conflict started, Gaza had more than 3,500 hospital beds. Today, just 1,900 remain. The situation is particularly concerning in northern Gaza. Medical evacuations have started. But it is important to expedite the process.
