Through new simulation, the Gen Z workers of Singapore are breaking the traditional model of the workplace by demanding flexibility and work-life balance. According to a recent IWG study, only 12% of young employees want to work in the office full-time, and 61% of the respondents find it most productive to spend two to three days in the office. It is disrupting conventions that have formed the basic expectations towards the workplace, and pushing organisations to think differently about how to attract and retain talent and manage their workplaces.

Leaders are told that they must learn how to cope or end up losing good employees. Saikat Chatterjee from Gartner said that Singapore’s Generation Z’s major focus in job hunting is work-life balance. Rather unexpectedly, the candidates prove ready to earn less money for the sake of having more favorable working conditions. The studies presented suggest that required attendance in the office may be detrimental to the turnover rates in knowledge-intensive jobs and women.

Issac Lim, who founded Anthro Insights, urges people to stop using such extremes at work. According to him, some activities are more efficient to be done in the office like discussions and teamwork. But it is significant to maintain the staff and allow them to manage personal and working life responsibilities to stay with the company. According to experts, organizations should be deliberate in their use of office space, to ensure that workspace organization and where people work depend on the type of work to be accomplished.
