Greenland is globally known as the world’s largest island which is abundant in natural resources and a pivotal location in the geography of the world. It is located in the arctic ocean and an autonomous territory of Denmark. Debate sparked when the US President Donald Trump expressed the controversial statement of acquiring ‘Greenland’ using the military force as it was a ‘critical’ location for both national and economic security, on Tuesday. Previously, he had expressed his interest in 2019.
Post his (US President Trump) statement the French Foreign Minister Barrot told,
“There is no question of the EU letting other nations in the world, whoever they may be… attack its sovereign borders. We are a strong continent. We need to strengthen ourselves more”.
“We need Greenland for national security purposes.
If you ask me: is the United States going to invade Greenland? The answer is no” he added
“Greenland Belongs to the Greenlanders and only the local population can determine its future” said the Danish PM Mette Frederiksen
Why is Greenland Significant for EU Nations?
As previously stated, Greenland is abundant in natural resources and a crucial geopolitical location for EU nations. Strategically, the resources like natural gas, mineral and oil will play a significant role for the EU’s electricity production, technological needs and their products such as batteries, e-vehicles and wind turbines. Both France and Germany are one of the leading industrial powerhouses of the world that rely on this resource predominantly for their future. It is a preeminent spot for the global economy and transport due to the melt of arctic ice.
Though Greenland doesn’t have any spot in the EU it becomes due to its special relationship with Denmark. So, France and Germany claim their support for the safeguard of Greenland from the threat of the US President.
Similarly, the US ‘Greenland’ is a much needed spot for climate change research, Thule Air Base (US Military installation which is located northwest of Greenland), natural resources to compete and counter their global rivals, and it is becoming a new shipping route for global markets.
