Google has laid off several hundred members of the Platforms and Devices team responsible for Android, Pixel phones, and the Chrome browser.
This restructuring decision is part of a larger overhaul of the internal company configuration aimed at making things faster and more efficient. One major change occurred last year when Google merged the Android and Chrome teams into one under Rick Osterloh.
Earlier this year, Google already offered a voluntary exit program for its employees in the U.S. in this business. The program was intended for those who were perhaps not comfortable with the hybrid work model or the new direction the team was heading towards. Those who availed themselves of this option were offered a severance package.
While making some cuts, Google maintains that it is in hiring mode, both in the U.S. and around the world. The goal is to do more with less and build great products at speed.
