How NOAA Layoffs Endanger Public Safety & Workers’ Rights

The National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) has terminated around 800 employees, with additional layoffs possible by the end of the week. Sources close to the agency indicate that the cuts affect multiple divisions, including meteorology, ocean research, and climate studies.

This wave of layoffs is impacting the probationary employees. The employees who are with less than a year of service. So, we can the new people have received termination letters citing a mismatch between their skills and the agency’s current needs.

But after this announcement criticism started, and critics argued that these cuts by NOAA would weaken the ability to track and predict extreme weather events in the Americas.

The layoffs are reportedly in line with Project 2025. Which is a conservative policy initiative aimed at reducing the size of government agencies. The National Weather Service which is a key division of NOAA is responsible for issuing life-saving weather alerts, was also affected though it remains unclear how many of its workers were dismissed.

Andrew Hazelton who worked on improving storm forecasting models, and climate scientist Zachary Labe, who specialized in AI-driven climate prediction are in the list of terminated people from the company.

Though the company announced a layoff but workers’ union is currently reviewing legal options. But for citizens of America, it can be a topic to stop and think about, as extreme weather events are on the rising, experts warn that further staffing cuts could put lives at risk as the prediction unit will be weaker.
