In an international statement released during the 57th session of the UN Human Rights Council, a coalition of 20 human rights organisations commended the UAE President’s decision to grant pardon to Bangladeshi nationals accused and convicted of serious crimes.
The Bangladeshis had been convicted over incidents affecting security and public order. In the statement issued on September 9, the organisations noted that the act of clemency reflects the UAE’s long-standing humanitarian approach.
The coalition is composed of over 20 international, regional and national human rights organisations. The organisations further highlighted that the Emirati leadership’s decision reinforces the country’s adherence to the values of tolerance.
UAE’s justice system in focus as president pardons Bangladeshis
In their international statement issued alongside the opening of the Human Rights Council’s session, the NGOs lauded the UAE’s justice system and its commitment to the principles of fair and independent legal proceedings.
The presidential pardon lifted the penalties imposed on defendants and convicts in general, thereby facilitating the scores of Bangladesh nationals’ return to their homeland. The statement also praised the humane conditions provided during the period of detention.
The human rights organisations also commended the quick action taken by the UAE’s attorney General to execute the pardon. They emphasised the significance of this move in promoting peace, tolerance and human coexistence across the globe.
Mohamed bin Zayed and Muhammad Yunus hold detailed talks
Before the clemency order, the UAE had convicted and sentenced 57 Bangladeshi citizens to lengthy prison terms for staging a rare protest in the Gulf state, against their then-PM Sheikh Hasina and her government amid deadly demonstrations in Bangladesh.
Late last month, UAE President HH Sheikh Mohamed bin Zayed congratulated HE Professor Muhammad Yunus on assuming his current duties as the chief adviser of the interim government of Bangladesh, according to official media reports.
His Highness expressed his hope that Yunus’ leadership brings prosperity to his country. He also highlighted his eagerness to collaborate in the near future to advance to advance the mutual interests of both countries and fulfil the aspirations of their people.
