Illegal immigration: El Salvador ready to accept US deportees of any nationality
US Secretary of State Marco Rubio has highlighted that El Salvador is ready to accept deportees from the US of any nationality, in addition to criminals imprisoned for different crimes in the US. President Nayib Bukele appears ready for the “extraordinary migratory agreement“.
El Salvador has also offered to accept dangerous criminals currently in custody in the US, even though they are US citizens or legal residents, he noted. Rubio is on a five-nation tour of Costa Rica, Guatemala and the Dominican Republic, after Panama and El Salvador.
Illegal immigration remains a big issue, especially after President Donald Trump returned to office on December 20. One idea being floated is to negotiate a ‘safe third country‘ to let non-Salvadoran migrants in the US to be deported to El Salvador.
