The issue of illegal immigration conveniently influenced the July general election in the UK that made Keir Starmer’s Labour the ruling party. The situation remains serious as a British court has sentenced a man to 10 years in prison for smuggling migrants into the country.

The 43-year-old Syrian man has been accused of transporting seven Vietnamese migrants in a dangerously cramped Van compartment. The concealed compartment has been described as so cramped that the group didn’t find enough oxygen and pleaded for help.

The seven asylum seekers could be rescued last February as they’re travelling in the van on a ferry from France to England. Hearing their cries, people used an axe to break open the false partition and eventually rescue the migrants.

By the time the group could be rescued, a couple of them had already lost consciousness. Prosecutors said the younger ones recovered from dehydration, but one man suffered a possible heart attack and another person experienced acute kidney injury.

One of the migrants even had to be rushed to the hospital in a comatose state and later suffered a stroke. The incident highlights the dangerous and inhumane conditions the migrants regularly get transported in, stressing the severe risks they face. The case underscores ongoing debates about immigration policy in the UK, especially after recent changes under Prime Minister Keir Starmer’s government. Critics have accused the current administration of surrendering to the smuggling gangs, as per reports.
