International Organisation for Migration appeals for $30 million for Syria
The International Organisation for Migration (IOM) has appealed for $30 million to urgently assist almost 700,000 people in Syria. 14 years of brutal conflict across the country have left hundreds of thousands of people dead and millions displaced.
Millions of people are displaced inside Syria and millions of others are seeking refuge across the globe. In a statement published on December 10, the organization expressed its support for the Syrian people and pledged to continue to supply humanitarian aid.
Figures are constantly being updated but up to 1 million people in Syria are thought to have been displaced by the most recent fighting, Infomigrants quoted IOM as saying. 4.2 million people are estimated to be in need of humanitarian protection and assistance.
IOM seeks long-lasting solutions to Syrian crisis
Protection needs are on the rise. The International Organisation for Migration’s flash appeal is meant to bring Syrians relief supplies, sanitation and health services, camp management and camp coordination, emergency shelter and transitional housing solutions.
IOM also emphasised its cross-border operations from Turkey into Syria. These efforts started in July 2014, supported by local and national partners. The UN migration agency seeks to find durable solutions for displaced people and promote peace.
Syria remains the largest refugee crisis globally. Since 2011, more than 14 million Syrians have been forced to flee their homes in search of safety. Nearly 5.5 million live in Turkey, Jordan, Iraq, Lebanon and Egypt. Germany is the largest non-neighbouring host country.
