Tehran: According to state media, Iran called in Britain’s envoy in Tehran following London’s accusations that Tehran had made “threats” to journalists based in the UK.
Iran’s charge d’affaires in London, Mehdi Hosseini Matin, was summoned Tuesday to hear a British protest over the alleged threats that forced Persian-language TV network Iran International to announce last week that it was moving.
Mrs Isabelle Marsh, temporary charge d’affaires of the Islamic Republic of Iran’s embassy in Tehran, was summoned to the foreign ministry on Tuesday due to the continued baseless accusations coming from England.
On Saturday, Iran International announced that it had shut down its London TV studios on UK police advice and had switched to 24-hour broadcasting from Washington.
As a result of reporting on anti-government protests in Iran five months ago, two of the station’s senior journalists received death threats.
On Tuesday, British Foreign Secretary James Cleverly said: “I am appalled by the Iranian regime’s continued threats against UK-based journalists, and I have summoned its representative to make clear this will not be tolerated.”
According to Iran’s foreign ministry, Cleverly’s comments were a continuation of Britain’s “Iranophobic policy.”
After London’s response to protests that broke out in September over Mahsa Amini’s death in custody, Iran’s relations with Britain were already at a low ebb
