Amnesty International’s deputy regional director for the Middle East and North Africa, Diana Eltahawy, underscored the brutality of the Iranian government’s acts and denounced its efforts to hide crimes and keep families from seeking restitution and justice. There are worries that authorities would use coercive measures to stifle commemorations of the uprising on its anniversary. The international community is asked to put pressure on Iran to maintain freedom of expression, association, and peaceful assembly. It is also urged to support families’ right to justice and to shield them from arbitrary arrest and threats.
The book by Amnesty International details the instances of families from all throughout Iran who have recently experienced human rights violations. These include arbitrary detainments, unfair trials, forceful questioning, monitoring, and grave site desecration. Families who had events against the prohibitions claimed that the security personnel were violent. It has also been shown that graves of victims have been destroyed, with shattered headstones and words proclaiming them as martyrs for freedom having been removed.
The group urges other nations to exercise universal jurisdiction and issue arrest warrants for Iranian officials who are reasonably suspected of criminal responsibility for crimes under international law committed during and after the uprising in order to combat impunity. The predicament of the victims’ relatives brings to light Iran’s continued fight for justice and responsibility.
