Is Donald Trump teasing US expansion? Canada, Greenland and Panama Canal in limelight
US President-elect Donald Trump is making global headlines for some of his foreign policy plans, putting numerous countries on notice less than a month before returning to his role. His policies seem to be focusing on Greenland, Panama and Canada.
Just recently, Trump threatened to take back control of the Panama Canal, the US-made passage. He has also taunted Canadian officials by suggesting the US could make it the 51st state. His first-term desire to obtain Greenland has also resurfaced.
Trump has suggested the US should retake the Panama Canal, accusing Panama of charging US “exorbitant rates” to use the canal and hinting at increasing Chinese influence, reported the Economic Times. But Panama is certainly not happy about it.
Canada is one of US’ closest allies. But it appears Trump joked about the country becoming the 51st state. He is more concerned about the security of the US-Canada border. He has blasted Canada and Mexico about border problems and the transport of illegal drugs.
