Is your manager a fear monger? Leaving a toxic, fear-based culture is better: Reports…

Today’s professionals are seeking environments where they can both mentally and emotionally thrive. Employees are now less tolerant of hostile environments, poor communication, and office drama. Recent studies show that toxic workplace culture is the number one reason why people  leave their jobs and 10.4 times more likely to contribute to attrition rather than compensation.

Organisational psychotherapists like Joan Kingsley, who is based in London states, “Fear is the most primitive emotion we have, and people use it mindlessly”. Using fear by managers in workplaces to get things done is not the right way. Employees should be encouraged and inspired to work rather than being forced to comply. By inspiring it’s certain that the required amount of work would be completed in a short span of time by the employee, and in a more efficient way along with the possibility of the employee increasing his productivity and doing more work than expected.

Sometimes, managers who use fear based techniques are highly focussed on achieving results and meeting targets. That’s what got them promoted to their roles, after all. But after some point, propagating fear would backfire. Few people can thrive under a reign of tyranny and when stress begins to set in, the employees would retaliate and may even lead to strikes or leaving the company after a while if not looked after.

Some measures that you can implement to keep a healthy lifestyle for recovering from a toxic job are as follows;

  • Find closure to resentments and anger that is stored inside your mind against those who mistreated you. This will help you move forward in life. Acceptance of the past is the way forward.
  • Take control of what you can. Your life is only yours. How you can progress in your work life and professional career is up to you and move according to your plans ahead and where you want to go.
  • Pay attention to triggers as they might bring back old memories. Avoiding those can help you to be comfortable at work and help you progress in your professional field.
