IT Giant TCS Struggles To Get Millennial Employees Back To Office

India – Indian IT (Information Technology) sector giant, Tata Consultancy Services (TCS), is facing a tough time calling its millennial employees back to offices. Around 80% of millennial employees are still working from home.

In 2021, TCS announced a 25/25 model, which was to be implemented by 2025. As per the 25/25 model, only a quarter of its employees would be required to work from the office at any given point. However, TCS now wishes that employees return to the office before it transitions to the new model in a phased manner. The company is also planning to end the work-from-home arrangement introduced due to the Covid-19 pandemic in early 2020.

Millennials, who reportedly form 70% of the TCS workforce, had returned to their hometowns to save on travel and residential costs during the Covid-19 pandemic. They are reportedly questioning the move to defer the hybrid work plan to 2025 instead of implementing it immediately. On the other hand, TCS has argued that remote work cannot be a sole arrangement at the moment.

N Ganapathy Subramaniam, Chief Operating Officer, TCS, reportedly said, “We can’t have new joiners not seeing a TCS office or interacting with role models as mentors.”

Earlier, TCS had also objected to the industry trend of moonlighting, also known as a side job or side hustle. TCS COO Subramaniam said, “Moonlighting is an issue we take very seriously as unethical.”

Earlier this month, TCS said it will not roll out salary hikes to employees who have completed just one year at the company. TCS said that experienced employees will be given a hike as part of the annual salary appraisal.

Earlier, TCS said that it will give a 5-8 per cent salary hike to its employees. TCS also said it was offering workplace flexibility to retain talented employees.
