At a special event marking 20 years of the World Uyghur Congress, an important group that stands up for Uyghur rights, Italian Senator Giulio Terzi spoke up. He expressed his deep worry and support for the Uyghur people’s fight against the Chinese Communist Party’s (CCP) harsh treatment of them in East Turkistan (also called Xinjiang).
Criticizing China’s “Criminal Actions”
In his virtual speech, Senator Terzi, who used to be Italy’s Foreign Minister, strongly criticized the “criminal actions” of the CCP carried out in Xinjiang and the Turkic region. He said, “Only those who are blind could ignore the genocidal way the Chinese policies are destroying the Uyghur people’s identity, culture, and region.”
Shining a Light on Terrible Human Rights Abuses
The Italian senator shed light on the terrible human rights abuses committed by the Chinese government against the Uyghur people. These include forced labor, the existence of “re-education” and detention camps, illegal kidnappings of individuals, families, and children, the destruction of mosques, and the prohibition of religious expression.
Growing International Criticism and Pressure
