It’s Harris vs Trump in 2024, but some other candidates could disrupt the race

US Vice President Kamala Harris and former President Donald Trump are the major party candidates in the 2024 presidential election. But several other people have also filed to run. These candidates might not grab victory but are likely to disrupt the race.

There is a high possibility of four candidates attracting away support from the Democratic party’s nominee and the one of Republican party. It’s important to understand these individuals’ objectives in order to vote for the best one this November.

4 candidates capable of disrupting US presidential election

1. Robert F Kennedy Jr

No outside candidate in decades has loomed over a national election as much as this relative of former President John Kennedy, according to BBC. The major hurdle to his independent candidacy is getting on more ballots – a complicated process varying by state.

“The Democrats are frightened that I am going to spoil the election for President Biden. The Republicans are frightened that I am going to spoil it for President Trump … The truth is, they’re both right,” he said at a rally in Philadelphia, before Biden decided to drop out of race.

2. Jill Stein

The Green Party presidential candidate calls for an “economic bill of rights” that includes universal access to healthcare and a right to employment. She has also promised to fight climate change, and defend transgender rights and abortion access.

The 74-year-old activist and physician ran as the Green Party’s candidate in 2012 and 2016. She stresses that: “Americans are not voting for a candidate they like … They are generally voting against the candidate they hate the most,” reported BBC.

3. Chase Oliver

This US presidential election, Oliver is running as a candidate for the Liberatian Party – the third biggest political party in the US. He is an openly gay sales executive who previously ran on the Liberatian ticket for US congressional races in Georgia.

Speaking to BBC, Oliver stressed the need to stop voters from picking from “the lesser of two evils”. He advocates for balancing the budget, and ending military support to Israel and Ukraine, abolishing the death penalty and closing all overseas US military bases.

4. Cornel West

The 70-year-old activist is running as an independent. His socialist platform includes slashing the defence budget and funding healthcare. His running mate, Melina Abdullah, is a member of the board of directors of the Black Lives Matter Grassroots organisation.
