In 2022, in a largely controversial move, the US Supreme Court overturned Roe v Wade, the legal precedent that had guaranteed abortion rights across the country for decades. The matter has become a top US election issue as the polls are set for November 2024.

In a recent social media post, Kamala Harris, Vice President and the Democratic Party’s likely 2024 nominee, slammed former president and Republican nominee Donald Trump on abortion rights as a stringent ban on the procedure enters into force in Iowa.

Harris dubbed the Iowa six-week ban on abortion “another Trump abortion ban”. “In November, we will stop Trump’s extreme abortion bans at the ballot box,” she further noted, highlighting that 22 US states currently have abortion bans in effect.

Reproductive rights continue to be a central issue heading into November’s polls – likely to pit Trump against the vice president after incumbent Democratic President Joe Biden dropped out of the election race earlier this month.

Biden has often stressed the need to defend access to reproductive healthcare. Democrats have also seized on remarks that US Senator JD Vance, Trump’s running mate, made on the procedure to paint the Republican ticket as a threat to reproductive rights.

Like Trump, Vance has said he believes the issue of abortion ban should be left to the 50 states to decide. But he had suggested in 2022 that there should be a “federal response” to people going out of their home states in order to access abortions.

In a different social media post, Kamala Harris stressed on Monday that, “More than one in three women of reproductive age in America now live in a state with a Trump abortion ban … I’ll sign a law restoring and protecting reproductive freedom in every state.”
