Manipur Refugees in Delhi Feel Helpless and Afraid After Recent Events

Many Kukis have fled to the city, worried about their education and future in Manipur. They worried about their families. Kuki and Meitei communities condemned the attack on Kuki women and demanded immediate government action to stop violence against women.

Delhi Commission for Women chief Swati Maliwal met sexual violence survivors in Imphal on Sunday. Mercy Kipgen (28), a Delhi University research scholar, has daily nightmares. Mercy said her father lost his job after the clashes, making it hard for the family to stay. I’m always worried about my family’s safety and money

Hatjalhai Haokip (25), a Manipur student from Churachandpur, said: There is a continuous threat to the lives of Kuki people who are still stuck in the state. Since May 4, reports of violence against women have been coming in, but the country and PM only noticed after videos went viral.

Despite many issues, my parents cannot leave the state as they have no other place to go, she said. Everything must go.

Kim Haokip (18), who fled Manipur with her family in May, is unsure if she can return to school. She claims she left her documents behind when they fled for their lives. She worries about getting into college.

After her house burned down, Chong and her husband struggled to find work.

An anonymous Meitei Ph.D. scholar at AJNU said It is humiliating to see that some people from the community are involved in such heinous and barbaric crimes.

There is a significant concern regarding the safety of women of all communities in the state and an urgent need to address these concerns, the scholar said.

There is now fear among people from the Meitei community as many Meiteis residing in Mizoram have started to leave the state, said Malem Ningthoujha, a historian in Delhi for over 30 years. Politics divides communities. We demand the Indian government immediately stop such violence.

Swati Maliwal met with sexual violence survivors in Imphal on Sunday. She said she had not “come here to do politics” and invited Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Women and child development minister Smriti Irani to Manipur. I will also try to meet the governor, she added.

I requested CM @NBiren Singh ji’s time. I hope he grants my request soon. I’ll head to the CM’s office. I want to talk to sexual abuse survivors about legal aid, counseling, and compensation. “Please allow me to help the people of Manipur,” she tweeted.
