Meta Initiates Performance-Based Layoffs, Targeting 5% of Global Workforce

Meta Platforms takes another staffing reduction today by axing 5% of employee positions worldwide through performance-based job cuts. The technology firm started contacting staff at 5 AM PST and planned to touch 4,000 employees worldwide during morning hours. Several key countries in Europe particularly Germany, France, Italy and the Netherlands cannot implement Meta’s layoffs due to their labor regulations.

CEO Mark Zuckerberg needs to get rid of weak performers at Meta while bringing on more business-critical machine learning engineers. Meta follows its organizational changes through planned employee notification dates from February 11 to 18 in European, Asian, and African regions. More tech companies follow suit as Google US Platforms and Devices launches its voluntary departures while Microsoft conducts performance-based layoffs and Amazon cuts 200 jobs from its fashion and fitness sectors.

Meta employees experience a stressful workplace environment much like what George Orwell depicted in his novel. Meta elected to keep its office locations open during this job shedding phase to keep life at work normal during major workforce adjustments.

Amazon is enhancing its engineering skills in new technologies because it selects which departments to restructure yet continues hiring for technical positions.
