Migrants’ Rights Group Condemns Bomb Attack on Offices in Cyprus

Last updated on January 12th, 2024 at 06:54 am

In a disturbing turn of events, a migrants’ rights group in Cyprus is raising concerns over the authorities’ silence following a bomb attack on its offices. The Movement for Equality, Support, Anti-Racism organization expressed dismay that no official condemnation has been made by government authorities after a makeshift explosive device detonated just outside its office on January 5th.

Doros Polycarpou, the head of the organization, highlighted the inexplicable power outage that disabled a security camera opposite the explosive spot at the time of the attack. He pointed out that while adjacent establishments had electricity, his office suffered extensive damage without any official response from the police or government.

The police spokesperson said that not all incidents get official statements, even if they involve explosions. The blast broke all the windows in the office and nearby homes and also  damaged a car. The European Network Against Racism  strongly condemned the attack and asked Cypriot authorities to thoroughly investigate.

Polycarpou shared threats on social media and messages on his phone with the police. He said the attack was carefully planned to scare them and spread false rumors which accused the organization of illegally helping migrants come to Cyprus. Cyprus has had more migrants in recent years, causing problems in some places. There were so many arrests and fights between groups against immigration and migrants. Which shows the biggest challenges faced by migrants.  The fact that authorities haven’t condemned these acts makes us worried about the safety of those helping migrants in Cyprus.
