The Covid-19 pandemic has forced over 56,000 Indian expats to leave Oman after years of residing in the Gulf country. Unemployment has been the chief reason for migrant workers to leave the country amid pandemic crisis.
On Sunday, Anuj Swarup, the Second Secretary at Indian Embassy in Oman said that till date Vande Bharat Mission has operated a total of 105 flights from Oman starting from May 9. This has enabled expatriation of over 18,000 Indian citizens to return back to the country. Mr. Swarup also mentioned that apart from this over 38,000 Indian nationals have returned through 216 charter flights which were being operated by many social organizations.
As we enter the Phase 5 of Vande Bharat Mission (VBM), a total 19 flights have been scheduled in the first half of August to various Indian states. Flights have been scheduled as per the registrations received by the Embassy and we will continue to facilitate travel of Indian nationals.

Many workers in the Gulf country of Oman have lost their jobs due to coronavirus pandemic. The repatriating flights which are a part of Vande Bharat Mission have been a positive opportunity for these workers to return back home due to lack of jobs and depleting money.
As per the official data, 20% of the total population in Oman is constituted of Indian workers and they form the largest expats community in the Gulf country. Data suggests there are 448,000 Indian migrant workers residing in Oman.
