
The Department of Government Efficiency fired more public workers through March under Elon Musk than all previous data monitored since 1989. According to Challenge Gray and Christmas data from March shows the worldwide staff decrease totaled 275240 workers. The majority of these cuts stem directly from DOGE’s efforts to streamline federal agencies.
Public sector agencies caused the highest number of job losses in March according to Andrew Challenger from Challenge, Gray, and Christmas. The company planned to decrease staff numbers fully after the DOGE initiative began operating.
Through their DOGE program the federal government has directed jobs cuts at 27 agencies which resulted in layoffs affecting 280253 workers and contractors. Non-profit health care businesses have reduced their workforce by 4,429 positions because they depend on federal money.
March became the third month with the largest number of announced job losses with 28,289 cuts since 1980. Only April and May 2020 had more job losses. While government positions bore the brunt of March’s cuts, other sectors experiencing downsizing included:
