Myanmar Cracks Down on Cyber Scam Centers, Frees 1,000 Foreign Workers
The Myanmar government army rescued nearly 1000 foreign prisoners who worked in online scam bases close to Thai limits. The government is now focusing on worldwide criminal organizations that use cyber fraud to operate throughout Southeast Asia.
According to the State Administration Council ruling Myanmar the authorities released 1,030 people during three weeks. The authorities have returned 61 victims back home while they wait to complete the verification process for returning the remaining rescued foreign nationals. Most victims belong to China and India along with East African people.
The border raids stem from Thailand and China pressure after a Chinese actor trafficking case revealed widespread illegal operations between the two countries. The Myanmar military initiates security operations within the scam areas in both Shan State and Shwe Kokko controlled by the Kayin State Border Guard Force.
The militia organization has promised to move 10,000 foreign employees who work in scam operations step by step from their operational zones. Thailand blocks electricity, internet, and fuel to cybercrime regions which forces illegal groups to end their operations.
Assistant Public Security Minister Liu Zhongyi of China works with Myanmar officials to get about 300 Chinese citizens back home. Beijing plans to support regional teams in fighting both internet betting and phone fraud rings.
According to the UN Human Rights Office many cyber scam hubs in Southeast Asia employ 220,000 individuals for criminal activities primarily in Myanmar and Cambodia.
