New York Toughens Stance Against Migrant Families; What To Expect

New York City in the United States has toughened its stance against migrant families amid the migrant crisis. Eric Adams, Mayor of New York City, has adopted various measures to expand the boundaries of New York’s legal obligation to provide shelter to migrant children. As more migrants arrive in New York City, Eric Adams limits shelter stay for asylum-seekers with children.

New York City toughens stance against migrant families

On Monday, Eric Adams announced a 60-day limit on how long a migrant family with children can stay at any shelter. Migrant families need to leave migrant facilities after 60 days and reapply for placement.

The new rule was announced by Mayor Eric Adams on Monday. The United States administration said in a statement, “As New York City still seeks further and timely support from federal and state partners, it will begin providing 60 days’ notice to families with children seeking asylum to find alternative housing.”

Currently, there are 64,100 migrants in the shelter system. The new rule can cause difficulties to migrant families who may be forced to relocate to another migrant shelter. It can also displace homeless migrant children who are currently enrolled in the public school system in New York City.

A new 500-family shelter in NYC

A new 500-family shelter in NYC is being built at Floyd Bennett Field. The migrant facility will serve about 500 migrant families with children who are seeking asylum. However, the facility would not provide families with their own rooms.

Brad Lander, New York City Comptroller, has criticized the mayor’s handling of the migrant crisis. He reportedly said, “Denying families with children the stability of a private room and curtailing their shelter stay is a shortsighted, cruel step.”
