Nika Gvaramia, a leader of one of Georgia’s four main opposition parties, has been detained by police after being beaten unconscious in the capital Tbilisi, according to the Coalition for Change political party.

The party published a video on X. It represented an unmoving Gvaramia being carried by the arms and legs by many people. Georgia has been plunged into a political crisis as people protest the government’s decision to suspend talks on joining the EU.

Nearly 300 people are in detention, and 26 are hospitalised.The ruling Georgian Dream political party retained control of parliament in the disputed October 26 parliamentary election. The EU granted Georgia candidate status in 2023 on condition that it meet the bloc’s recommendations, but put its accession on hold later.
