NYC migrant shelters continue to decline as number of asylum seekers fall
NYC officials plan to eliminate 10,000 beds for migrants. It comes as the number of migrants reaching the city has continued to decrease and the number of asylum seekers being housed by the authorities there is at the least level in 18 months.
The shelter closures announced on Friday include the closing of one of the largest shelters in Brooklyn that had housed up to 4,000 people and triggered strong quality-of-life and crime complaints from the nearby residential neighbourhood.
Nonetheless, despite the decline in migrant numbers, the closures mean NYC authorities are still required to find someplace else to house the thousands of people earlier living in the tent complexes, according to media reports.
So officials have announced plans to open a shelter in Bronx to house 2,200 single adult male migrants – previously housed at emergency tent shelters on Randall’s island and at other Shelters that are also closing.
