The UN International, Impartial and Independent Mechanism has released a detailed report titled ‘The Syrian Government Detention System as a Tool of Violent Repression’ to highlight serious human rights violations including enforced disappearances. The UN General Assembly-mandated team prepared the report, documenting systematic torture and abuse across more than 100 public detention facilities in the country. IIIM Head Robert Petit noted the seriousness of the mental and physical harm intentionally inflicted. Former detainees described concerning patterns of physical and psychological abuse, including beatings, stress positions and sexual violence. The probe highlighted inhumane conditions such as insufficient food, lack of hygiene and denial of medical care. The IIIM collects evidence for future accountability proceedings. But it cannot conduct trials. Despite seeking cooperation from Syria, the entity has so far not received any response. But it continues outreach efforts to States holding relevant information.Concerning patterns of abuse at Syrian detention facilities
