Samsung India Workers’ Strike Intensifies Over Employee Suspensions in Tamil Nadu

For four straight days, Samsung India has been experiencing a work stoppage at its Tamil Nadu plant because employees refuse to come to work. On February 5, the workers initiated their protest because Samsung India suspended three office-bearers from the CITU.

CITU secretary E Muthu Kumar led 50 supporters in a Saturday evening rally at Sunguvarchatram which is 2 kilometers from the Samsung plant in Sriperumbudur district. Fifty members from CITU protested to make suspended employees start work again. If their demands stay unresolved the union will enlarge their protest by seeking assistance from other trade unions in Tamil Nadu.

According to Samsung India, they took legal action to enforce company policies when workers broke rules so the suspensions went through official company processes. Despite 500 out of 1,750 workers participating in the strike, the normal production procedures continue at the company since most employees are working.

The dispute has continued since workers from 2024 joined in a strike over pay updates until government intervention ended it. Although the organization states it wants government help for discussions the union leaders say no official meetings with labor department staff have taken place.
