Shocking revelations: South Korean students, teachers facing a deep fake porn crisis

After South Korean authorities uncovered a sprawling network of deep fake porn Telegram chat rooms targeting schools, colleges and universities. Teenage activist Bang Seo Yoon have begun collecting testimony of abuse from victims.

How the crime takes place 

Many of the cases followed a pattern where it is being observed that schoolboys in order to harass female students and teachers steal normal selfies from private Instagram accounts and create explicit images to share in the chat rooms specifically to humiliate them in front of everyone.

Super wired South Korea is the place with the highest average internet speeds that has been battling sexual cyber violence since a long time. According to experts, a toxic condition of AI, Telegram and lax laws has increased the height of the issue and now it is tearing through the country’s schooling system. 

Experts comments on the issue

According to Bang, “It’s not just the harm caused by deep fake itself, but the spread of those videos among acquaintances, family and friends circle that is more unbearable and painful.”

She has received thousands of reports from devastated victims since authorities found the first Telegram chat rooms typically to prey on female students and even teachers. Police reports say that the perpetrators are mostly children.

Prosecution Rates

Prosecution rates are awful. Between 2021 and July this year, 793 deepfake crimes were registered and only 16 have been taken up by the authorities. 16 individuals were arrested and prosecuted by the court according to police. The shocking part is that there are 7 teenagers who were arrested amidst the crackdown by the police since August due to spreading deep fake content.
