Sikkim Makes Labour ID Card Mandatory for Migrant Workers

The Sikkim government requires every migrant worker to hold a Labour ID Card for official verification. The authorities want to control the growing migration numbers and keep criminal individuals from coming to the state.

All landlords had to finish their tenant verification work by February 10. Senior Superintendent of Police Tenzing Loden Lepcha in Gangtok District emphasizes security checks as the essential reason behind this new rule. According to Ragul K from Labour Department many professional workers and untrained workers from different states come to Sikkim for employment opportunities in construction business and hospitality services.

Employers need to check labor credentials for every migrant worker before they make any hiring decisions according to the Sikkim Labour Regulation of Employment and Conditions of Service Act (2021). These workers will face detention and return with no access. Employers who do not properly register their employees will receive legal consequences plus a ₹2,500 fine for each worker.

Every person working in labor must obtain their identity card according to state rules. Employers need to have their identity cards available during every work shift. To obtain verification workers must present their Voter ID, Aadhaar Card and a single passport photo. Employees must pay ₹200 every year to obtain their Labor ID and keep updating it annually.

Authorities promise to take firm legal action against both workplace violators. All enforcement steps to control labor begin after February 10 ended.
