spain’s leader visits west africa to talk about people moving to europe
Pedro Sánchez, the leader of Spain, is visiting three countries in West Africa: These are Mauritania, Gambia and Senegal. He wishes to befriend these countries and discuss issues to do with people from Africa migrating to Europe.
Why This Trip Matters
Most of the African immigrants attempt to cross the sea to get to Europe. They usually visit the Canary Islands which is an archipelago of Spain. This year alone, well over 22,000 people have visited these islands. Wow, that is twice the number of people that we had last year. Spain needs to look for better ways of dealing with this.
This Article aims at identifying what Spain and Mauritania agreed on, by analysing the nature of their bilateral relations.
During his visit to Mauritania, Sánchez made some agreements with their President, Mohamed Ould Ghazouani. Here’s what they agreed:
1. Spain will begin an agreement to allow some people of Mauritania to work in Spain for some time and return to their country.
2. The two countries will join hands to prevent the criminals who deceive people to undertake risky boat trips.
Sánchez’s View on Migration
Sánchez doesn’t believe that it is wrong to move to another country. He says:

The Canary Islands Situation
The Canary Islands are near Africa and many people attempt to get to the islands by sea. Here’s what’s happening:
– There are more tourists in the islands this year.
– Some are the youths in search of employment opportunities.
– Some are escaping from threats in their home countries.
– The Spanish authorities believe that possibly more people may arrive in the future when the weather conditions allow the use of boats.
What Happens Next
Sánchez will also travel to Gambia and Senegal. He wants to discuss the same with their leaders. All these countries are in the process of trying to come up with better policies of dealing with people that are in transit between Africa and Europe.
The idea is not to completely eliminate people’s mobility. However, they aim at making it safer and more organized. In this way, it can be beneficial to the people who migrate and the countries which they immigrate to.
