Starbucks layoffs: Coffee chain plans major changes as CEO Brian Niccol streamlines operations

Starbucks is planning to lay off 1,100 employees across the globe. It comes as Chairman and CEO Brian Niccol streamlines operations to help the company run more efficiently, increase accountability, reduce complexity and ensure better integration.

In a letter to employees released on Monday, Niccol highlighted that the company is going to inform employees set to be laid off by midday Tuesday. He also noted that Starbucks is going to eliminate many open and unfilled positions.

Starbucks has 16,000 corporate support employees across the globe. Many employees in different departments are not impacted. Baristas make up most of the company’s 361,000 employees and they are not included in the ongoing restructuring efforts.

Starbucks layoffs come as other big companies make similar changes. The coffee chain hired Brian Niccol last fall to address sluggish sales. In its most recent quarter, Starbucks topped most sales expectations after the CEO made some necessary changes.
