The Supreme Court of India, the highest court and the authority of the country, has called for sensitivity in cases of crimes against women and girls.
The Supreme Court said in a ruling on Friday that courts were expected to be sensitive in cases involving crime against women and girls across the country.
The statement by the top court came on the appeals filed by the two convicts, a man and his mother, challenging a 2014 order of the High Court of Uttarakhand.
Justices J B Pardiwala and Prashant Kumar Mishra said in its verdict, “The courts are expected to be sensitive in cases involving crime against women.” The Supreme Court dismissed the appeals filed by the two convicts.
A man and his mother appealed to top court against their conviction for cruelly treating the man’s wife. The man’s wife died due to poisoning. The man and his mother challenged the judgment of the Uttarakhand High Court.
The Uttarakhand High Court had convicted the husband and mother-in-law for cruelty against the man’s wife.
The husband and wife married each other in 1997. In 2007, the wife’s father filed a case over the death of his daughter under mysterious circumstances. Later on, the woman’s husband and mother-in-law were arrested. However, they claimed that they were innocent.
On Friday, the top court said that the woman died due to poisoning. The bench of Justices said, “We completely rule out the theory of suicide as sought to be put forward on behalf of the appellants.”
During the ruling, the top court called the authorities and other High Courts across the country to be sensitive while dealing with cases involving women. It can be a victory for women’s rights in India. High Courts will be sensible and sensitive while dealing with cases in the future.
