Tamil Nadu Govt Announces ₹20,000 for Every Gig Workers to Purchase E-Scooters

In a major decision, Tamil Nadu Finance Minister Thangam Thenarasu presented a new scheme in the state’s 2025-26 budget through which a ₹20,000 subsidy would be provided to gig workers. The grant will enable the workers to buy electric scooters (e-scooters) essential for delivery work on portals like Zomato, Swiggy, Zepto and Blinkit.

The government will give this subsidy to 2,000 online service workers allowing them to purchase e-scooters and improve their delivery efficiency. Gig workers who use these vehicles for their daily work will be highly benefited by this financial support.

Also, the state will launch an insurance scheme for almost 1.5 lakh gig workers which will give them and their families financial security in the event of accidental death or disability. This insurance is an indication of Tamil Nadu’s government concern towards the betterment of its gig workers who are crucial to the state’s economy.

With this budget statement, the Tamil Nadu government seeks to encourage sustainability and provide improved assistance to gig workers.
