tesla scales back cybertruck production as sales drop sharply

The latest reports show Tesla needs to reduce Cybertruck assembly volumes while relocating employees because its sales figures failed to meet market expectations. Based on Cox Automotive estimates Tesla Moving the first quarter of 2025 sold 6000 Cybertrucks which cut its sales in half when compared with the previous quarter. Even though Musk said Tesla received more than one million Cybertruck pre-orders ultimately the company delivered fewer than 50,000 models so far.

Tesla officially lowered performance from its Texas Gigafactory since its production lines now build far less than their full capacity. The company has shifted Cybertruck employees to Model Y creation since last December, after evaluating work changes and worker selections. In April Tesla launched its basic Cybertruck variant with rear-wheel drive to sell at $70,000 in hopes of enhancing sales. During Q1 2025 Tesla delivered 13% fewer vehicles than it did in the same period from one year earlier.

Industry analysts attribute the broader sales decline to:

  • Increasing competition in the EV market
  • Tesla’s aging product lineup
  • Protests outside Tesla showrooms affecting customer traffic
