With the aim of minimising the staff in the CFPB (Consumer Financial Protection Bureau) which are overseen by Elon Musk under the DOGE (Department of Government Efficiency) the Trump administration planned to lay off nearly 1,500 early this year. But during the hearing regarding the case filed against this inappropriate layoff the District Judge Amy Berman has ordered to pause the layoff by expressing her concern over these.
“I’m willing to resolve it quickly, but I’m not going to let this RIF go forward until I have,” said Amy Berman, Federal Judge.
Further, she ordered that the next hearing of this issue will be conducted on 28 April 2025 (Monday). This historic judgement with philippic against the company’s remorseless act over their employees with warning that the judicial system will not withstand the continued exploitation of working communities.
“We’re not going to decide what happened until we know what happened,” she added.
Previous Stage of CFPB Layoff Case
- The Trump administration decided to lay off the CFPB employees of about 1,500, early this April 2025.
- This decision was strongly opposed by many employees and consumer advocates.
- So, a lawsuit was filed by the NTEU (National Treasury Employees Union) representing the CFPB staff.
- During the first hearing the lawsuit claimed that this layoff violates the federal employment law and the court orders.
- They requested an emergency injunction enforcing the pause of these mass layoffs.
