The labor rights violation by FAVORI LLC compels 134 Somali workers to go on strike

Around 134 workers of Favori LLC Airport Management & Ground Handling Services (FAVORI LLC) have now halted their work and took to the streets as the organization has blatantly disregarded their fundamental work rights and continue to do shocking violations against them.

FAVORI LLC has continued to pay lower wages to Somali laborers while paying enormous pay to foreign workers, even though hard work of Somali workers kept the airport running. And, they were benefiting huge amount of profit because of their handwork.

Lately, the Company had refused to settle an equivalent and reasonable pay to the laborers. Didn’t help in ending segregation and harassing workers in office, ensuring health, safety and security of laborers at work; and stop the one-sided decision taking to revise the job contracts which is in absolute dismissal of the current terms as per the ILO standards.

The Federation of Somali Trade Unions (FESTU) today expressed solidarity to workers of Mogadishu’s Aden Adde International Airport who were on strike. Omar Faruk Osman, General Secretary of FESTU expressed that FESTU completely supports the workers for collectively declaring strike and opposing the abuse they were facing by FAVORI LLC.

FAVORI LLC has continued to abuse workers rights since past eight years and all endeavors to counter this injustice failed. The Company continued to abuse workers and didn’t follow Somali laws and ILO standards. These harassments should stop,” summed Osman.

FESTU urges the Somali government and air terminal administration to execute Somali labor law and ILO measures on FAVORI LLC to end the workers abuse.

FESTU stated that the laborers and their union attempted to agreeably resolve issue through the dialogue but the company did nothing. Specifically, FESTU and its sister organization in Turkey, HAK-IS Confederation, made many attempts to resolve situation; however the company intentionally abstained from any negotiations.
