Trump Orders USAID Shutdown, Forcing Mass Exodus of Workers Worldwide
The Trump administration told USAID to fully stop operations worldwide making all staff depart from their jobs. Under the order, direct USAID hires overseas must return to the United States within 30 days except if designated essential. USAID will reach the end of its more than 60-year history because the Trump administration will eliminate all unnecessary personnel.
After putting employees through company-wide workforce cuts and budget controls the administration and Elon Musk’s Department of Government Efficiency moved to further reduce spending. USAID’s top leaders were fired and their Washington office shut down while their main computers were taken away. The agency suspension blocks global assistance operations worth billions which include sending security guns to Ukraine and ensuring safe water supply while teaching Afghan girls in Taliban control.
Health programs like polio protection and HIV/AIDS therapy have stopped operating while needed food and medicine stay trapped at ports. The US government needs Congress to approve any action when USAID operates independently. The urgent departure of USAID staff will lead the organization to spend tens of millions relocating its workforce.
