UN refugee agency secures $1.5 billion in early funding for 2025

The UN refugee agency (UNHCR) has secured early funding commitments of a record $1.5 billion for next year. It comes against a backdrop of global forced displacement surging to 123 million across the globe.

Filippo Grandi, UN High Commissioner for Refugees, highlighted that the robust support for refugees and other forcibly displaced people resonates as a much-needed message of solidarity and humanity, according to a report by the UN.

Thanks to governments which have announced contributions worth US$1.14 billion to UNHCR’s 2025 budget at our annual pledging conference today.

The early funding commitments include $1.143 billion from donor governments. This accounts for the agency’s 15% anticipated needs. Flexible funding from donor countries enable UNHCR to quickly supply aid and respond to underfunded situations.

The funding comes at a crucial time as recent conflict, persecution and violence in Sudan, Ukraine, Lebanon and Gaza have forced millions to flee their homes. Millions more have been displaced for decades, fleeing bloodshed and instability in home countries.
