us elections does donald trump 2.0 mean an end to automatic citizenship for children
Donald Trump’s triumph in the US Presidential race is going to have huge implications for different sectors. One of the top priorities of the Republican politician is to end citizenship by birth. The plan is to sign an executive order to this effect on Day 1 itself.
If one takes a closer look, automatic citizenship for children is not going to end just for children born to illegal immigrants. The effects could be on a broader scale.
The draft executive order reads that at least one parent needs to be a US citizen or a green card holder (permanent resident) for their future children to become automatic citizens of the US. But immigration experts believe the order if passed could be challenged.
If passed, the crucial executive order is going to unleash numerous challenges for Indians in the US – as children born to Indian couples (neither of them fulfilling the necessary criteria) shall not be considered eligible for automatic citizenship.
The problem is also in the fact that many Indians living in the US are caught in a long backlog in terms of allotment of green cards.
Citizenship by birth gave scores of Indian couples in the queue for green cards a breather. If not they, at least their children had the assurance of stability on the immigration front. This US presidential election race had a great focus on illegal immigration.
