Voluntary retirement plan in focus: BSNL layoffs to impact 18,000 to 19,000 employees
Indian telecommunication company Bharat Sanchar Nigam Limited (BSNL) has proposed a fresh voluntary retirement plan VRS 2.0 and announced that it is going to reduce thousands of job positions to enhance its financial balance.
The BSNL layoffs are going to impact around tens of thousands of employees as the company focuses on reducing costs. This comes as the company rolls out 4G and 5G options across the country.
BSNL has requested approval for the proposed voluntary retirement plan via the Department of Telecommunication (DoT). Currently, the company spends around Rs 7,500 crore to manage its staff. The proposal is expected to reduce the amount by a significant percentage.
BSNL has made a staff reduction request. But the final decision is going to be made by the Cabinet and the Finance Ministry. The telecommunication company recently noted a slight improvement in revenues.
