The resignation of Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau has caused political consequences and sparked debate over immigration policies going forward especially along the border between Canada and the United States.
Trudeau’s resignation coincides with a change in public opinion on immigration, economic difficulties and mounting pressure from the Trump administration.
If Canada does not crack down on immigration and the illegal drug trade, President-elect Donald Trump has threatened to impose a 25 percent tariff on all imports from both Mexico and Canada.
According to experts, Trudeau’s resignation will not significantly change the course of Canadian politics or border policy and will have “very little” impact on immigration policy. However, if the Conservatives win back power after an election, the action might result in change.
According to Valerie Lacarte, a senior policy analyst at the Migration Policy Institute’s U.S. Immigration Policy Program, Trudeau’s departure is partially a result of a change in the public’s understanding of the advantages of immigration.
