Whirlpool Fires 651 Workers At Declining Demand

The Whirlpool Corporation confirmed that it will place 651 people on layoff from its production plant in Amana, Iowa, effective on June 1, 2025. According to the company, declining consumer demand for specific refrigeration products manufactured at that facility is forcing it to make this unwelcome decision.

More than a third of the total staff will be affected by the layoffs.

Whirlpool Rationale Behind Job Cuts

Whirlpool’s public statement noted the job cuts had nothing to do with external factors like tariffs or trade policies but was simply reacting to alterations in market situations.

“The reduction is necessary to adjust production based on what customers currently want. It’s part of aligning with today’s demand,” a company spokesperson from Whirlpool said.

Support for Affected Employees

In order to support employees losing their jobs, Whirlpool is providing assistance via on-site human resources teams and the employee assistance program, along with aid in obtaining unemployment benefits in conjunction with Iowa Workforce Development.

Union Statements: “Outrageous” and “Unfair”

Labor unions have denounced the layoffs with vigor. The International Association of Machinists and Aerospace Workers, IAM, which represents a majority of the affected employees, voiced concerns about the family and community impact.

Iowa Federation of Labor, AFL-CIO, also condemned the layoffs, especially because Whirlpool had $17 billion in sales last year. Union leaders now call upon lawmakers to restore unemployment benefits lately cut, saying the job losses deal a heavy blow to workers in an already shaky economy.
