Yoon calls for full disclosure of N.Korean human rights violations

Seoul, 28 March (IANS) As the government gets ready to release a report on Pyongyang’s human rights situation for the first time, South Korean President Yoon Suk Yeol stated on Tuesday that North Korea’s violations of human rights should be fully exposed to the world.

During a Cabinet meeting, he stated, “The reality of the heinous human rights violations against the North Korean people must be fully revealed to the international community.”

According to the 2016 North Korean Human Rights Act, the Unification Minister is required to report annually to the National Assembly on the state of human rights in the closed society, according to Yonhap News Agency.

A North Korean human rights foundation is also required by law, but it has been years since it was established due to the Democratic Party, the main opposition party, refusing to recommend any of its members for the foundation’s board.

Seven years have passed since the North Korean Human Rights Act was passed, but Yoon claimed that neither the North Korean human rights foundation nor the North Korean human rights report had yet been established.

Even now, the North Korean Human Rights Act needs to be put into action.

The President expressed his desire for the North’s human rights situation to be widely discussed both at the upcoming Summit for Democracy and at the ongoing UN Human Rights Council regular session.

The unification and education ministries were among those he urged to use the release of the North Korean human rights report to inform citizens at home and abroad about the state of human rights in the North.
